Service at St. Matthew's

   Minimize
We serve each other and others through outreach programs that extend throughout Hillsborough, Orange County and beyond to people who need help or who are in need inside and outside the U.S. We seek to carry the gifts of our Sunday morning worship with us, sharing them through our fellowship, service to others, and stewardship of God’s creation.

The Social Ministries Committee meets the second Thursday of each month to assist the parish in responding to the needs of others in our community.  Currently, St. Matthew's participates in the following activities in and around Hillsborough.

  • Food for All:  In 2005, St. Matthew's joined with other Orange County churches and organizations to provide simple, individually-packaged evening meals to homeless and hungry people in Hillsborough and environs.  The meals are prepared and served Monday through Thursday every week.  St. Matthew's currently provides meals on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month, the 3rd Tuesday, and the 5th Thursday.

  •  Orange Congregations in Mission:  OCIM is a non-profit ministry composed of over forty churches in northern Orange County which strives to meet the emergency needs of those who find themselves in crisis situations.  St. Matthew's participates by providing support through the annual budget, special appeals, and by providing dry cereal and beef stew for their pantry.

  • Orange/Alamance Prison Ministry  St. Matthew's Church participates in this ecumenical ministry to support the work of a chaplain and volunteers in our local prison, as well as working with inmates who are scheduled for release.

  • Cameron Park School Partnership:  This partnership is a community-based program designed to enhance and celebrate the historical and environmental significance of the setting of our neighboring elementary school.

  • Dickerson Chapel AME:  In 2006, St. Matthew's began an intentional ministry partnership with our neighboring African-American congregation, Dickerson Chapel, AME (located at the corner of Queen and Churton Streets in Hillsborough).

  •  Festival for the Society Tree:  FeST is a holiday fund-raiser exhibiting the rich history of our church and harnessing the creative and artistic talents of the parish to raise funds for outreach projects in keeping with the Millennium Development Goals.  Held the first weekend of December, FeST is aligned with Hillsborough's Candlelight Tour.

  • Habitat for Humanity:  St. Matthew's has participated in building several Habitat houses in Orange County.
